Minimalist prairie golf on an epic scale — Nebraska has quietly become one of the great public-golf road trips in America, and every marquee course here is one you can actually play. In the northeast, King & Collins's Landmand erupts out of the Loess Hills with some of the biggest, wildest greens in the game. Out west lie the Sandhills: Wild Horse, routinely called the best value in golf; the Prairie Club's 46 windswept holes above the Snake River Canyon; and a string of firm-and-fast hidden gems. It's a spread-out state tour — fly into Omaha for the east, or North Platte/Denver for the west — but for links purists who'd rather earn their round than wait on a private invite, nothing else quite scratches the itch.

Jim Engh's naturally routed dunes course in south-central Nebraska (formerly Awarii Dunes, now under new management) — a genuinely good track for around $80 with a cart. Exceptional everyday value.
